Pope Urban 11 promised peasants forgiveness from God for all their sins if they joined the crusade. Christians killed thousands of Muslims and Jews. Jewish and Muslims inhabitants fought together to defend Jerusalem. Crusaders entered the city on 15 July 1099. They massacred the inhabitants and pillaged the city.
